I didn't expect to like this book because the description seemed to be as much a travelogue as cookbook. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend, and found that I like it very much. I particularly like the layout, with the ingredients to the left of the directions, listed in order along with the relevant instruction. Many of the recipes are easy to make. Lidia also lists alternatives for ingredients and equipment that are hard to find. I found the comments about the various regions not as distracting as I thought. This book is excellent for browsing, and spends almost as much time on my desk as in my kitchen.

Lidia Italy 140 Simple and Delicious Recipes from the Ten Places in Italy Lidia Loves Most Lidia Matticchio Bastianich Tanya Bastianich Manuali 9781400040360 Books Reviews

Lidia's recipes never disappoint me. Some are pretty elaborate, but the results are amazing.
I own 5 of Lidia's cook books. I like them all but this is my favorite. I use it at least 4 times a week and have several favorites that I make often. My husband loves the new recipes. I especially like the stories in the book that go with each chapter. I lived in Ticino (Switzerland) and gave a good friend that still lives there this book as a gift, she too loves it. Recipes are easy and delicious. Being Italian American I especially liked the recipes that were close to what my mom made. Highly recommend this book.
I actually checked this cookbook out of our local library and loved it so much I ordered the book. Have concocted several of the recipes and I am now a believer in fresh pasta. I read the book pretty much cover to cover and was facinated with the narrative that was provided for each region (I almost feel like I've been to each one, met the people, visited the ruins, etc.). I also found the discription of various ingredients that are better than others (which are fairly easy to locate and do make a big difference). Wish there were more photos - though the ones included are beautiful. I now also own "Lidia Cooks From the Heart of Italy," which I am also thoroughly enjoying.
This book features a culinary tour of Lidia's favorite spots in Italy, showcasing those area's regional specialties. Included also are a sampling of history and culture, and nice photographs, taking this book beyond mere cookbook to abbreviated cultural tour. Many of the recipies are uncomplicated and suitable for even a busy weeknight, and some others allow for advance prep. Because of that, this cookbook is practical. I love the way Lidia introduces us to the regions of Italy included, instead of just throwing a bunch of Italian recipes at us and calling it a day. The only way I think I could enjoy this volume more were if additional regions of Italy were covered, as I am now curious about their particular specialties. Lidia is a very down to earth, pleasant lady and her narrative is enjoyable both in her TV shows and in her books. This is my favorite of her books yet!
I was so happy to get this book, which I purchased almost solely to get the recipe for Capucci! Ever since a dear aunt passed and her kids neglected to snag at least some of her excellent recipes, I've been saddest about not having that one. And no searches anywhere --including other family members!-- were yielding anything truly similar or authentic. I haven't even tried Lidia's recipe yet (!) but just reading the ingredients and instructions, I know it's going to be fantastic (although I'll use sausage when I first try it, so it seems like Zia Rina's). Looking through the rest of the book, I am really excited to try all the recipes in this excellent selection of dishes ... my family and friends are in for multiple treats!

The shipping/service was premier, as usual, too. That always helps, right?!
Without a doubt, another fine labor of love and respect of Italian cooking from our Lidia. Knowing where to begin to describe this voluminous compilation of culinary joy is difficult, in that there is much to tell. Allow me to begin with its intention.

Lidia has covered 10 regions within the cultural offerings of her beloved Italy, and while she gives the reader a gastronomic tour, her lovely daughter, Tanya, gives the historical tour, which was an excellent melting of the two grand reasons to appreciate this culture. To be sure, Tanya has a Ph.D of Renaissance history from Oxford University, and you come away with a deeper appreciation of Italy and the recipes that her mother has offered.

This rather heavy book has superb photography of prepared dishes, ingredients in the raw, spectacular views of the Italian countryside, as well as some of the charming people that she has known along the way, and along the years. Perhaps this is something of a "family" album, if you will.

The regions covered are Istria, Trieste, Friuli, Padova and Treviso, Piemonte, Maremma, Rome, Naples, Sicily, and Puglia. In beginning each regional chapter, Lidia begins with a listing of the recipes contained within, then gives her own little introduction to the territory. As she presents each recipe, she gives another small introduction that will either give a sort of educational mention, or perhaps a cooking hint. At the end of the chapter, Tanya brings it to a close with "Tanya's Tour" in which she breaks down the region with specific areas of interest and notables, and gives the reader an incredible short education of history and information.

There are 140 recipes within this tome, and they are covered within the seven categories of

APPETIZERS
SOUPS
SALADS, SIDE DISHES, and CONDIMENTS
PASTAS AND RISOTTOS
FISH AND SEAFOOD
MEAT and POULTRY
DESSERTS

It would be a much longer review if I mentioned each specific recipe, but I believe it would suffice to say that, knowing Lidia and her passion for the true art of culinary creations, they would all be delicious. Besides, I am sure that you could find someone for each dish who would be most grateful for your labor of love, courtesy of Lidia. Having purchased all of her books, I have been most pleased to serve so many of her dishes to very happy guests, and never have I been disappointed. Lidia herself has degrees in food chemistry and such, so her fountain of knowledge is backed with science as well as love of this artform.

And to add a final note, a listing of the dishes made on her new PBS series, "Lidia's Italy", is presented at the end of the book, listing the recipes made on each show and from which region they come. You are also given her sources for some of the fine foods she uses, which include stores and websites.

As our grand dame of Italian culinary creations always tell us, "tutti a tavola per mangiare". Ciao!
I hate to admit it but I was a little disappointed in this book and wish I would have gotten one of Lidia's other books instead. In this book she shares recipes and her daughter shares travel information. While I love her show on PBS, the recipes in this book will be too hard for me to make (get the ingredients). The travel information is okay but not spectacular enough to over come the fact that I can't make most of the recipes in the book.
