Proxy Alex London Books

A flawed book, but one I enjoyed nonetheless. The book is very fast-paced, which is usually a good thing, but sometimes the break-neck pace works against the world and characters. A few important revelations feel lesser because there's no pause in the action. The world is interesting, but there are some elements of it that just don't make a lot of sense. The protagonists are really the best part of the book.

There are a ton of cliches and overused tropes at play here. You get everything from kissing to avoid guards to melodramatic CPR. A big reveal halfway through the book annoyed me because the character's plan was so elaborate and illogical. It's irritating when characters just ignore simple and obvious solutions to their issues. That's not the only contrived event either.

I also had issues with the ending, and not just because it was a downer. I understand that the journey is usually more important than the destination (at least in fiction), but I thought the book skimmed over stuff it had been building up to for a long time in an unnecessary rush to the ending. The ending manages to resolve the main plot and be a cliffhanger at the same time. I would be impressed if I didn't hate cliffhangers so passionately.

That being said, I will read the next book. Eventually. As I was reading I thought I'd immediately read "Guardian" after finishing "Proxy," but I always need a break from a series after depressing endings.

Proxy Alex London Books Reviews

Proxy is a gripping sci-fi adventure story. It's also a stark picture of privilege and its lack, of how different the world can be for two people living in the same place.

The setting is vivid and richly imagined. Mountain City is a place where technology and capitalism run unchecked. Computer code runs in the blood, targeted advertisements based on your entire life history follow you everywhere you go, and nothing is ever free. It's a place of excess both beautiful and horrible.

The two leads are very human, very real. Knox is the son of one of the wealthiest and most influential men in the city and has every material luxury he wants, while Syd is an orphan who's been in debt since infancy and lives in the back room of a tech repair shop in the slums, but the two of them are equally the products of their environment and, each in their own ways, the victims of it. They're both thoroughly believable characters, flawed but sympathetic.

Well, eventually sympathetic, in Knox's case. Earlier in the book you may be ready to strangle him -- after his own recklessness gets a girl killed, he tells himself that he doesn't see why anyone's making a deal about it, because it was an -accident-, wasn't it? It's not like he did it on purpose, so what's he got to feel guilty about? Yeah. He's -that- kind of person.

But when chance throws him and Syd together, he's forced to confront reality in a way he'd really rather not, and he does begin to grow, slowly, reluctantly, but surely. And you see, too, why he is who he is. By the end of the book... well, he won me over.

Syd, by contrast, I liked from the start. His life frankly sucks, through no fault of his own, and he's understandably and rightfully furious about that. But he's smart, and determined to survive and remain true to himself. In a society where pretty much everything revolves around who owes who money, he's a guy who-- despite having nothing himself-- still can't resist doing a favor for someone he knows won't be able to pay him back.

I really appreciated how his sexuality was handled, as well. He's gay, and though he hates the homophobic insults flung at him when certain people find out, again he's able to stay true to himself, and he's comfortable with who he is. There's not a lot of romance in this book -- the characters have much bigger problems to worry about for most of the story -- but there's no question that he likes boys and he's cool with that. I'm always on the lookout for YA sci-fi and fantasy with LGBT protagonists, and there aren't as many of them as I'd like, so this made me happy.

Anyway, getting to know both Syd and Knox -- and watching them gradually begin to understand each other and, against all odds, become friends -- was a great delight, and I'm really glad I picked this book up.

Oh, and then there's the ending. About the ending, I will just say AAUGGH. But... in a good way.

I really only had two complaints

One was that in certain places in the story, the technology felt... hmm... very hand-waved and vaguely defined. That's the case in plenty of sci-fi, of course, but here there was one point in particular that made me stop and say, "Oh, come on, you just made that up for the sake of drama." Which was unfortunate, because it jolted me out of what was otherwise a really bold, dramatic and emotional moment in the story. I think that it could have worked had there just been a little more time devoted to establishing the rules by which this world's tech played, but as was, it felt kind of contrived.

The other is that when Syd and Knox are in a scene together, the author has a tendency to hop back and forth between their viewpoints without warning, sometimes as often as every couple paragraphs. Once in a while he does it with other characters, as well. Omniscient point of view is one of those things that can be done well but is tough, and here it mostly felt like jarring, distracting head-hopping to me.

The thing is, though, these two complaints are pet peeves, and could be total deal-breakers for me in a lesser book. Proxy, I'm still giving four stars, because the rest of it is just that good. I definitely recommend it to sci-fi and dystopia fans, and I'll gladly pick up Alex London's next book.
You know how sometimes you have 1.7 million books on your TBR list but then someone comes along and recommends a book you've never heard of and you just drop everything and read it??

That happened to me with Proxy.

And you know what....It was an excellent decision. Sometime you just have to trust your book buying gut!! Proxy is a fantastic story and an exciting read. It broke my heart in all the right ways and made me think. I love when that happens!!

I must confess I also love it when an author takes a classic story or theme and reimagines it. Proxy it turns out is a dark and dynamic take on The Whipping Boy (which was already pretty dark). It has been a very long time since I read that book but I remember it stuck with me enough that it has a place on my bookshelf to this day

Anyway, Proxy is set in a futuristic, high-tech, post-apocalyptic, dystopian America (my favorite). Where the rich are insanely outrageously in control of the lives and assets of the entire society and the poor are so deeply in debt (often from the moment they are born) that many are forced to pay their "debt" as Proxies (or whipping boys) to the wealthy. While the idea of legalized torture as a means to teach lessons to snotty rich kids may seem absurd the vast disparity of wealth distribution and the overwhelming debt situation facing the average young american is not...

Maybe I sound a little pessimistic and paranoid and my liberal is showing for sure....But is it really that hard to imagine a time in the not so distant future where we would sell ourselves to companies in exchange for the latest technology or more importantly life saving medications and treatment? Perhaps that's why I love these dystopian books so much. I love the what if's and even more than that I love the stories of the people who fight the system and save the world. I like the darkness but I love the hope (maybe I'm not such a pessimist after all).

As much as I gravitate to these stories for the subject matter at the end of the day I don't love a book unless I connect with the characters. The three main characters in Proxy are amazing. I love them. (*****WARNING***** From here on out things are a little spoilery, not much but a little soo...reader beware).

Knox was that guy you love to hate until you suddenly realize you actually love him. Exactly one second into this book I was thinking "Ugh, ew! I certainly hope this isn't the main character." (this may have had something to do with the seemingly vapid girl he was in the car with and the annoying text conversation they were having). But he was a main character and his story was arguably the most important.

Knox is the poor little rich boy you have zero sympathy for until you start to understand the deep dark emptiness this character carries around in his soul. Still, his internal suffering wouldn't be enough to conquer his horrifying apathy if he didn't have a pretty extraordinary character arch. Which he does. Whew!

Sydney (Syd) on the other hand is instantly likeable; strong and sympathetic he has the terrible misfortune of being Knox's Proxy (Knox was basically a demon child and Syd has paid in blood sweat and tears for it...literally). Syd is also chapter 11 (gay) and that brings a really interesting dynamic to the story. I appreciate how the author treated Syd's sexual orientation like it was just part of life, just who Syd is...it wasn't a huge deal and the story did not revolve around it. That's not to say the author doesn't tackle some of the tough stuff... he just did it in a natural and understated way.

I felt for Syd, a lot. It was pretty darn impossible not to. His life story was tragic and it pulled at my heart strings in almost every chapter. Syd however. was made of stronger stuff than someone like me. He didn't much see the point in self pity and so you the reader don't either... And it makes you love him all the more.

One of the very best parts of this book was watching the brotherhood that forms between Knox and Syd develop. In my last review I confessed that sibling relationships are often the lifeblood of a good book for me and this one was no different. While Knox and Syd are not technically brothers eventually they begin to see each other that way and when they do the truth of it is undeniable. The protectiveness that Knox (and Marie) feel for Syd by the end of this story is right on par with that of any blood sibling.

Which brings me to Marie. Marie was fascinating because she was smart and sassy with a good head on her shoulders.... but she was a crusader and the author had interesting points to make about her stance. Marie's character certainly spoke to those of us (coughMEcough) who have a tendency to hop right up on our soapboxes and spout wisdoms about issues we may not truly understand. (I maaaayyyy have done that in this very review) I think I have a lot to learn from Marie....

And then there was the ending.....Holy hell. I finished the book and just stared...stared at the last page for a good five minutes. I was all "NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo!" But on the other hand, the tiny sad voice in my heart who loves symmetry and appreciates the beauty of self sacrifice when it is truly necessary thought.... "yes. that was how it needed to be...there was no other way." The love and growth that sacrifice demonstrated was just gorgeously moving...and of course heartbreaking.
This is a novella used as an introduction to Elizabeth Briggs' great series, Chasing the Dream. If you sign up for the author's newsletter, she will give it to you free. Before I even finished it, I was buying more of the series, so that should tell you how much I liked it. It introduces the band members as they are getting ready to perform on Battle of the Bands. The bands this night are all from UCLA and USC. It's written from Kyle's point of view, and he's the keyboardest for his band, and I enjoyed his take on his job. He says his place in the band is to blend together the lead guitar, bass and drums, making them all sound better! While they wait, their bass player disappears, and then he hears she left because his brother Jared had a one night stand with her, then dumped her. (Obviously a jerk with poor timing!) Kyle is the problem solver, and he sets off to find her and get her back in time to perform. And who offers to help him? His old girlfriend who broke up with him three years ago when they started college on opposite sides of the country. It's very well written, and sucks you into the scene, sharing the pressure of the night and the nerves of the players, so you feel as though you're right there with them. I hope you try it for yourself, because I really think you will.
Jgtimm

More Than Exes Chasing The Dream Elizabeth Briggs 9781502473431 Books Reviews

My only real complaint about this book is that it was too short!!! I wanted more of Alexis and Kyle!!!

I love that this story is told from his POV. I think male POVs are better simply because most of the time there is a lot less whining about what’s happening or not happening. And let’s admit, wouldn’t we all like to better understand what guys are thinking?

Kyle is the keyboard player in a band with his brother and they are about to perform in a battle of the bands, but their bass player is missing.

Alexis moved across the country 3 years ago to go school, and she broke Kyle’s heart when she said she didn't love him anymore and it would never work out between them.

This story takes place in just one evening, but the action and fun and sex that comes as part of that evening is plentiful. I love the way the story progresses and that it gives us some much needed background for the follow up novels as well.

I really enjoyed the almost over the top thoughts he had after their first kiss…

Our lips touched for the first time in three years. It was everything I remembered and more. Like waking from a long coma. A bright sunrise over a dark sky. The first hint of spring after a long winter. I was truly lving again, in the way I normally only felt when I was on stage.

I think it’s so cute how much he missed her and I love the way they got where they needed to be.

If you like rock star romances and you’re looking for a quick, enjoyable read, please check out this book!!
This review is cross-posted from my blog.

More than Exes is a prequel to More than Music and it takes place all on the same night, the evening of the USC/UCLA battle of the bands. The story is told from Kyle’s perspective as he tries to keep his band together and avoid his ex-girlfriend who has suddenly shown up at the battle.

Obviously, this doesn’t work, and Alexis ends up helping him on his mission to find their strung-out bass player and convince her to play the show, despite a one-night stand with Jared that leaves her devastated.

I loved the look into Kyle’s head, and seeing what Jared was like before his determination to stick to one woman at a time. The hints at Kyle and Alexis’s relationship from high school were great, and their chemistry and ease with each other were apparent for the whole story. They had such a different dynamic than Maddie and Jared, which was refreshing and shows off Briggs’s talent.

I was a little frustrated by how much of a player Jared was–throughout More than Music I assumed the guys were exaggerating, or that when Jared said it was in the past, he meant by more than a few months. But that didn’t keep me from falling in love with Kyle’s good-boy image under his bad-boy exterior, and rooting for him and Alexis all the way.

3.5 stars
So this book was really cute, had some hot and steamy, some drama, and was just a fun read in general. I normally don't really like the whole novella thing, but I do make exceptions. One of those exceptions is when it comes to novellas that are there to set up a series, and this novella is doing just that. Plus I really liked the synopsis and the cover, so this was an easy buy for me.

So this whole novella takes place over a couple of hours one night at a Battle of the Bands, USC versus UCLA. Kyle is there with his band, which is made of his brother Jared, Jared's best friend Hector, and the missing in action Becca. As it turns out Kyle's brother is a bit of a horndog which has caused Becca to go MIA. Kyle being the good guy he is realizes if they have any shot of competing in this battle he has got to find Becca. Only while he is looking for Becca he runs into the girl who broke his heart several years ago, Alexis.

So since the book is super short, I don't want to give too much away. So what I will say is that I liked Kyle, I liked that he is just a good guy in general, but he also is kinda learning to stand up for himself. I liked that he loves his brother fiercely, it seems like the two of them have a strong bond (an a big backstory there). I will admit to liking Kyle more than Alexis but that might be because the whole thing is told from Kyle's POV. Alexis seems like a girl who has spent a lot of time trying to figure out where she fits in and who she really is. I like that she is confident in herself, seems like more than was before when she was dating Kyle. I liked the two of them together in general. There is a jerk in this short story, but I will leave you guys to experience him on your own, cause he really is a grade A jerk, but makes the story a little bit more interesting with his antics.

All in all this was a pretty good set up for a series and a good fast read for me. If you like hot, tattooed musicians and second chance romances in new adult, or are just looking for a quick novella to read, you might want to check out this one.
I have read the first three books in the series, and it was different than I expected. I definitely liked the movie more, because with these books, I missed the loving Grandma-type character. That was kind of the whole point of the movie, and in the book Grandmere is a monster, so I was surprised in a not-so-good way. But once you get over that, you can enjoy the novels better. After the third one, though, I decided I had better put them down, because I'm only 13, and in all of them, there inappropriate mentionings of things I don't really want to hear it. Also, Lilly Moscovitz is just kind of annoying because she's not nice at all, not the slightest bit, just kind of a bully. But I did like Helen Thermopolis and Mr. G, and Michael Moscovitz especially. If you were expecting the movie, brace yourself for something different, but if you weren't just enjoy.

The Princess Diaries Turtleback School Library Binding Edition Meg Cabot Books Reviews

Nothing will ever be the same for Mia Thermopolis. Her biggest problems in life are failing Algebra and her mom dating her Algebra teacher. And then her father drops a bomb on her. He’s the Prince of Genovia, a small European principality. That makes Mia a princess and, since her father cannot have any more children, she will one day rule Genovia. Suddenly her life includes princess lessons from her not very pleasant to be around Grandmere, trying to hide the whole princess thing from the kids at school, and a big fight with her best friend Lilly along with lots of extra Algebra practice. When word gets out that Mia is a princess she is afraid her worst fears will be realized.

The Princess Diaries is told through diary entries written by Mia. While these entries are usually interesting, they are often very repetitive. While this is probably very accurate for a 14 year old girl’s diary, it gets a bit boring to read the same thing over and over. Discovering you are a princess is probably every little girl’s dream so the story is very relatable. I recommend this book for middle and high school kids.
Meg Cabot's 'The Princess Diaries' seems somewhat fantastical. The idea that a young girl can find out she is heir to the throne of a small country and its fortune is not something that happens everyday. Yet Cabot writes in a realistic and appealing way, showing that Mia Thermopolis, despite being anything but the picture of a princess, can adapt like the best of them - even if it's under duress.

When Mia's father shares that he can no longer have children and then reveals his princely status, Mia is floored. She doesn't understand how there is any way that she has royal blood in her. It becomes increasingly evident that it's all the truth when Mia's grandmother, the dowager princess and present leader of Genovia, comes to town to give Mia "princess lessons."

Concerned that her newfound royal status will ruin her longtime friendship with best friend Lilly, Mia avoids telling her about it. When word leaks anyway, she is a found in a mess, dealing with paparazzi, mean girls turned nice, and the interest of popular boy Josh Richter, whom Mia has been interested in for as long as she can remember. Lilly's brother, Michael, also plays into the revelation, talking to Mia even when she and Lilly are on the outs. Add in that Mia's mom is dating her algebra teacher, Mr. Gianini, plus the fact that she's flunking algebra and realizing that everything isn't what always meets the eye, and Cabot has set up the equation for a disastrous but salvageable first couple months of school. Mia just has to see herself for who she truly is and how she can use that to her advantage.

Even though it was a big part of the book to have Mia flunking algebra and trying to save her grade through after-school study sessions with Mr. Gianini and Lilly's brother, Michael, the algebra equations throughout the book (which were supposed to be part of Mia's journal) were somewhat distracting. The book would have worked well without them. Otherwise, the story moved along nicely and set up Mia for a fascinating first couple months of freshman year of high school.

Beth Rodgers, Author of 'Freshman Fourteen,' A Young Adult Novel
First, if you're picking this book up, make sure you've read the other two Wings of the Nightingale books first. You must come into this story with a preconceived idea of Kay.

It's extremely rare for me to relate to a heroine, especially in Christian fiction. I related to Kay in a way that almost brought me to tears at times. She endured (even worse) two things that I myself have endured and greatly shaped me, especially in my college years.

First of all the reason I recommend reading the first two is so that you solidly have in your mind that Kay is a flirt and possibly a "slut". That was me in college. The devout Christian girl who flirted but was reluctant with kisses and never yielded further.

For the first two books, we're led to believe Kay is a godless flirt with a bad reputation. Nothing could be further from the truth. Kay flirts but is chaste. Roger, the quintessential good guy rebuffs her flirtations. Oh have I been there. It's devastating. I felt for Kay.

Another endearing quality is that Kay can't sing and was humiliated by her father, a harsh man with a twisted faith. Being tone deaf and devoid of any rhythmic ability, I hate the thought of having to sing in public. I so felt for Kay, especially later when Kay was expected to entertain.
She's also a devoted nurse who wants to make a career of it. I'm the daughter of a nurse who was as dedicated to her profession until she retired. I'm a career woman as well undoubtedly inspired by my mother's influence.

Other than his reluctance to become involved with Kay, Roger is a hero you can't help but like.

In Perfect Time Wings of the Nightingale Sarah Sundin 9780800720834 Books Reviews

I loved this entire series, and with each book, it somehow got better and better! We finally read the story of Kay Jobson, and I don't know about anyone else, but I was shocked when I found out the secret about her past. It made me angry that an entire family could treat someone that way! And now that I think about it, Roger Cooper has a similar upbringing. I wanted to scream at both of their families and throttle them! Thank goodness these 2 people joined the Army and decided to make something of themselves! Kay is a flight nurse and Roger a.k.a. Coop is a pilot. I loved this story and I thought it brought this whole series together quite nicely. I loved each and every second, I will be recommending to others, and I will be reading more by this author. Fantastic writing, Sarah!! )
I loved this book! This is the final book in the Wings of the Nightingale series. Although this book can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend beginning with the first book, With Every Letter (Wings of the Nightingale Book #1) A Novel, to appreciate seeing the cast of characters throughout the series. Kay and Roger first show up in book 1 and even then Roger didn't want anything to do with her. I was expecting that Kay would not want to believe in God for most of the story and would change towards the end. Ms. Sundin totally surprised me with her storyline! Actually, Kay becomes a Christian early on in the story and the rest of the book is about her accepting her new identity and learning what it means to really trust God. Roger was also a pleasant surprise. He seems to have it all together but he had some serious issues he was dealing with. There is a lot of action as the pair (and their squadrons) travel around Italy, France, and the US. Danger brings them closer together even as Roger tries to keep his distance. I loved Kay and Roger's romance because it started out as a friendship (even though there was an attraction that Roger was trying so hard to hide). I appreciate Ms. Sundin's stories because she does not water down the spiritual content but makes it an integral part of the story because God is an integral part of Kay's and Roger's lives. It was satisfying to see Kay and Roger view themselves with a new identity and to realize that every good gift comes from above. After reading all three books in the series, I was so happy to read a last chapter with all 3 heroines (Mellie, Georgie, and Kay) and I could close the book with a smile on my face. I loved this entire series! Few authors can match Sarah Sundin and her WWII era books.
This is the third book in this series. The first two are called With Every Letter and On Distant Shores.

Kay has a group of boyfriends and she's proud of it. Her father has labeled her as evil, so she might as well embrace the role. She wants to be a chief nurse, but to get a recommendation to get into the program, she might have to change her ways.

Roger is a drummer. He wants to be in a big band someday, but he also has a hidden dream of being a teacher. His family has always told him that he won't amount to anything, so he doesn't believe it's possible. He has a reputation of being sloppy in his work and unreliable, but he's trying to change.

At first, Kay believes Roger to be more of a holy-roller, but when she talks to him, she finds out he has a past as well. He gives her a prized possession, his Bible complete with notes, and they form a close friendship. With his past, Roger has decided to only date if he wants to get married and hasn't felt the need to try it. Until now.

When their flight is shot down, these two get close, but Roger still has his issues that lead to misunderstandings. After weeks trying to escape from behind enemy lines, they come to rely on each other.

This was a great story with a lot of depth. These two misunderstand each other on a number of occasions, which got a bit tedious, but it did reflect the lack of confidence they felt in themselves. Mellie and Georgie from the other two books are around a lot, but if you really wanted to, I suppose you could read these out of order. However, I would recommend reading them in order if you could, since you'll get a more continuous, complete story.
First, if you're picking this book up, make sure you've read the other two Wings of the Nightingale books first. You must come into this story with a preconceived idea of Kay.

It's extremely rare for me to relate to a heroine, especially in Christian fiction.
Dork Diaries 5 Tales from a NotSoSmart Miss KnowItAll Rachel Renée Russell 0884170864576 Books Reviews

My grandkids love this series of “Dork” books for their dry humor, and anarchic wit. I read this one before gifting it to them. I admit I didn’t it that funny but the kids thought it was just great. They are a better judge than I as to what kids like and find humorous. They give all theDork books the highest accolades.
I love Rachel Renee Russel so much. The struggles of Nikki Maxwell are certainly real, and Russel is so good at expressing emotions and feelings of her characters. The story itself is very clear. I can look at this and think that it is real, like a true story. The one thing that I am not sure about is the amount of drama. It might make young girls worry too much about school. Otherwise, this is a great book. I would recommend this to anyone from seven to seventy!
great book, my child loves it! When I went to go look for her at her video game console, she wasn't there. I went into her room and she was on page 346 and had just started. I ordered the other books and I've found a way to keep her off of screens. Thanks !
My 11 yr old daughter is in love with these books. She can never wait to devour the next one when it arrives. ❤️❤️❤️
My 10yr old daughter loves the ‘Dork Diaries’ series, she does skip around and this is her 5 book this school year. I like the series because they qualify for her accelerated reader goals and tests. A school requirement.
I really liked it sometimes I fell as if I go through the same stuff Nikki does but I have never been bullied before but I do have the BEST friends EVER. I suggest this book to anyone and everyone and a bunch of kids in my classes at school would agree. Our library has those books but it is almost impossible to get them
cause they are ALWAYS out. The only way I could get to these books was to buy them. I would even suggest this book to boys all the boys in my class have at least read one of them and almost all of the boys are burrowing them from other students, teachers, or the library. So please BUY THIS BOOK I love it and I think you will to. )
This is a really good book it’s F-U-N-N-Y and it deserves five stars from my 3 younger siblings (Francesca Tammy and Dexa) my 2 twins (Krissy and Joshua ) (Btw Joshua is a boy )and my older twin siblings (Gracie and Elie) say “Your books are the best even though we are a family of nine doesn’t mean reading your books isinglass something we can do together” Thank you for looking at this rating I hope our big family inspired you to read Rachel Renee Russells books(if you are wondering how we travel we have a minivan 🤣🤣🤣)Bye goodnight and happy new year from the Wilson familly

😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀🤣😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Hive J K Accinni 9780988223677 Books

J.K. Accinni has really done it! These are great books, he does a fabulous job with building his characters, sometimes managing to scare you death with your understanding of them-Seth!-and feeling as though it is YOU in the story instead of poor Maryann, Lorna, Jennifer, and (sob) Suzy! Trying NOT to spoil-Lorna makes a terrible, deadly mistake as she tries to make it across country with her two granddaughters and a young teenager (Maryann) she finds along the way. She observes the very worst of man coming to fore, seeing rapes taking place alongside the road, murders, and accepts the offer of help from Seth, and lives to regret it. These books are some you just can't put down. I read this one in one sitting-unable to even put it down to eat! Highly recommend!!. But either read the first three individually or get the Alien Intervention Books 1-3. I'm reading Evil Among Us now, Book 5!

Hive J K Accinni 9780988223677 Books Reviews

This books moves very quickly as the Earth is destroyed by the greed of politicians world wide. It's clear we DO NOT deserve this planet as the author's timely and perceptive conclusions indicate.

Having met Caesar the great tiger that guards Scotty and his girlfriend who is recovering from a wild blind side, I am prepared for ANYTHING to happen.

Netty moved to the forefront as she explains the rules in the magical Hive. I love the nostalgic possessions from her farm, ties the books all together beautifully. We find out exactly what happened to Netty and crew after their deaths. We also find out the real story behind our own origins and who God really is.

Lorna and her grandchildren are going through the most evil hell above ground as they try to find their was to the Hive but encounter the henious dark side of man instead. I pray they make it but it is clear they will never be the same again. I just loved Lorna's last scene at the end of the book. I could feel her dispare and hopelessness and I felt as filthy and broken down as the author discribed her.

Poor Kenya has not had her baby yet even though it is waaaaaay past her due date. (Love her sassy and wise outbursts) Lots of love intrigue going on in the Hive. No one is aging, they are getting fitter and health conditions are healing.

This series is just terrific and I am anxious to read on!
This is book four of a series. By this point in the series Accinni has set up her story line so that an Apocalypse becomes the only logical conclusion to the state of society. In this book, the aliens with the help from a batch of quirky humans have tried to save some of the animal life on the planet before the final war starts.

I’ve been following this set of characters through several books and have come to love them especially Baby and Echo. I may have been as happy to see Netty appear as any other character in the book.

Accinni does have the knack of bringing the reader into a story in such a way that when you look up from the book you are surprised to find it snowing outside instead of being swelteringly hot and the house is filled with the scent of gingerbread, not animal dung.

This is not a stand alone book so start at the beginning with Accinni’s book Baby Species Intervention Book One. Enjoy the whole series.
I have read all 7 books in this saga. I gave it a 4 star because a couple of the books could have been combined so that it wasn't 7 books total. It could have been a 5 or even a 4 book saga. Other then that, I really enjoyed the story line and the author's style of writing. These books are not bogged down with unnecessary details used as fillers. Actually, I become somewhat emotionally invested in the characters and their stories. It did bring home the fact that we, humans are killing this planet. If you are looking for a short, easy reads with some interesting twists then these books are for you with just a enough syfy to keep it interesting. I did find just a couple of grammatical errors however, they will not distract you while you are reading.
Most of my questions get answered in this best of the series so far. The style of writing is consistant and lovely.

Hive (Species Intervention #6609 Book Four) byJ.K. Accinni is a great read!

The characters are in shock over the big reveals. Homo Sapien's true origins for one! No point telling you the plot except to say that the magic is back with the survivors pulling together.

Some scenes have been dark but I felt like a deer caught in the headlights and couldn't turn away.

And best of all...Netty is back. Not the Netty we know and love but a healed and wonderous one! (Baby and Will too)

One of the most heart-wrenching yet touching scenes was when Barney was left behind and died alone in the woods with the bombs dropping. The tears fell fast on that one. Don't worry, it has a good outcome. Only in the magic of the life-giving Hive.

I highly recommend this book and the entire series!
In "Hive', JK Accinni does not disappoint, she shows no sign of running out of steam on her Species Intervention series.

I loved the introduction of exciting new characters to react with my old favorites. The unveiling of Baby, Netty and Wil was a tremendous surprise as was the revelation about The One, (so sly!) the developing love triangles, the new mysteries mixed into her stew in the Hive and the brutal reality of disgusting behavior during the bombing.

I also love the attention she is giving the wildlife, a great bonus for us animal lovers. Poor Ginger Mae, I enjoyed seeing the birth of their new lives through her eyes. I can see JK has something planned for Scotty and his gang. The characters are so real, so alive. I cried over poor Barney, what a lonely heartrendingly real scene...then surprise and joy--she pulls it out. A darn shame I have to wait so long for the next one. I think it is her last in the series. Wish it wasn't!!!

Mickey
Straight Outta Fangton plays with the title of the beloved movie Straight Outta Compton and the resemblances are there for anyone who wants to go into that direction.
But Straight Outta Fangton has earned the right to be discussed on its own: just follow the story of Peter, a vampire who works in a convenience store and lives a not very glamorous life and then gets thrown into a world where his life (or death?) is always on the line. It’s an urban fantasy, with a splash of thriller, with a great comedic tone, quirky and sarcastic. The pace is quite good and you’ll keep reading until the very end without feeling disappointed.
The author does a brilliant work creating a fantasy world with amazing characters that work very well together. It was a very enjoyable reading.

Straight Outta Fangton A Comedic Vampire Story edition by C T Phipps Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Peter Stone hasn't been a vampire very long, but long enough to recognize when the evening is going terribly wrong. What starts out as helping a new vampire with the transition turns into a complex night of lavish parties and unforeseen deceit wrought with conspiracies. Plus what would a vampire story be without bloodthirsty vampire hunters!

Set in New Detroit, where vampires have built up a Vegas-like capital for tourism and glamorized their nightlife, Straight Outta Fangton delivers a daring plan that unfolds into a complex plot that degrades into all-out war.

The more Phipps work I read, the more I enjoy his fun style. The dialogue and characterization bring some lighthearted moments to an otherwise intense conflict. Peter is frustrated with the realities of his dead-end unlife, but begrudgingly still cares for his creator, Thoth. When he finds out a psychotic vampire hunter is in town, he goes to warn Thoth of the hunter's violent plans to attack the Old Ones.

Naturally, there's a lot more history to it than Peter was aware of, and in playing his part to protect his way of life, he must confront his own personal history, from the people he loved to the terrors he took part in.

The tension picks up considerably toward the end, and I enjoyed being fully immersed in this extravagant tale. I loved the variety and depth Phipps brought to the characters and the vampire culture in general. I highly recommend this book to readers looking for a smart urban fantasy with violence and action, and vampires that are decadent and bold without being romanticized.
Do you remember your favorite Vampire in any book or film? Whomever you choose, you’ll find good reason to read this book. I have been a big fan of Anne Rice’s Lestat for decades. I loved The Lost Boys, Van Helsing, and Being Human was an awesome show on both sides of the pond. Then there was Trueblood. Which turned into a huge disappointment in later seasons, but’s that’s because C T Phipps wasn’t writing for them. If he had been we’d still be watching today. Except we’d have a city, like Detroit, in which many Old Ones seek to create a vampire utopia.

Now one of my favorite vamps is Stone. Peter Stone.
Straight Outta Fangton is intensely funny and snarky while it maintains a unique view of undead life. Character driven to the core. This would make an extremely well-loved series on screen. We need more black vampires as main characters in this genre. Especially since this is a self described comedy. The snark is intelligently done and fits the characters perfectly, creating a relatable scenario full of nerdy book and film one liners.
Phipps has done some really nice work here. The plot is a mystery which is not so cliched, that you spotted it in chapter one either. Kudos on that storyline Charles! The dialogue, while both hysterical and campy at times is quite good. The world building is terrific.

The supernaturals are varied and their plight, their actions, and especially the cold hearted way in which they view mortal lives while playing the long game as they age are fascinating.

A tangled mix of heated divisive views creates a great weakness in council of the Vampire Nation and now the Vampires, and the Ancient Ones, with their long laid plans, are being hunted by one of their most feared enemies.
A thorough pleasure to read. Looking forward to the next.
This is the story of Peter Stone, who is a vampire who has been exiled by his maker from his hometown of New Detroit, where vampires are actually quite numerous. He makes his way by working at a convenience store, not unlike a 7-11, with his boss the werewolf drug addict, and his friend and servant (someone who serves a vampire for a time until they change them).

When they find a newly made vampire in the ladies room of the store one night, one who was made and then left there alone without any of the support a newly made vampire would need, Peter steps in to help her out, and to see if he can figure out who she is and why someone would do this to her. In trying to figure it out he runs into all kinds of vampire shenanigans.

This story wasn’t too bad. It was well written and engaging enough that I never had a problem staying interested in it. I liked Peter, as a character, and I rooted for him to win the day, so to speak. This one, like the Weredeer series is full of pop culture references, some of which seemed admittedly a little out of place at times, but not too often.

Cary Hite, the narrator, was probably most of the reason I liked this book as much as I did. He was a fantastic narrator for this book, and he made every character in it come to life for me. I especially loved his narration of the character of Thoth (I dunno if I spelled that right, because audiobook) who is Peter’s maker. He’s described as having a very slight Caribbean accent, and Cary Hite totally nailed it. It was just perfectly slight. So super well done on the narration front. I’ll definitely endeavor to listen to books that he narrates in the future.

All told, I had a pretty good time with this one. It wasn’t my favorite vampire fantasy novel, but it was certainly an interesting idea to see things from the POV of a poor vampire in a city full of vampires and how he makes his way in the world.

This review is based on a review copy.
Straight Outta Fangton plays with the title of the beloved movie Straight Outta Compton and the resemblances are there for anyone who wants to go into that direction.
But Straight Outta Fangton has earned the right to be discussed on its own just follow the story of Peter, a vampire who works in a convenience store and lives a not very glamorous life and then gets thrown into a world where his life (or death?) is always on the line.
I was expecting a completely creepy read I mean look at the cover and the title, demons and exorcisms screams horrifying but what I wasn't expecting was quite a few funny moments which actually made me enjoy Possess that much more.

Bridget is a pretty amazing girl, to wake up one day and learn you can banish demons is pretty crazy but the girl was strong and did her thing when it came to getting rid of the demons. I'm glad that the author gave us an explanation on why she was able to banish demons and there was a back story to it instead of her just being blessed with the gift or something.

There was romance but believe me when I say it was the furthest thing from any sort of insta love, like etc. Bridget literally wanted to be left alone by everyone including Matt who was a childhood friend of hers, which is why when she finally did fall for him it just made it that much sweeter.

I do have to say that there were some aspects of Possess that was predictable which is what kept me from giving it a full five star rating but the plot was fast paced and a lot of interesting things happened along the way.

Overall Possess was full of demons, exorcisms, possessed dolls, priests with hidden agendas, mystery, romance and a spunky heroine and if your looking for a book with all that then I highly recommend Possess.

Possess Gretchen McNeil Books Reviews

WOW! Where to even start with this book! I only bought this book because I have been seeing it all over the blogosphere and I thought the cover was AMAZING.

That being said, going into this, I had no idea what it was even about.

AND O-M-G I was BLOWN away! This book is not my normal cup of tea. I don't normally do thriller/suspence novels, but since it had the paranormal element I love, I thought it would be ok. This was as action packed and suspenseful as you can get! There was even romance- an All-around perfect book.

Plot This story starts off right away with the main character- Bridget, coming to terms with the fact that she can speak to and banish demons. She gets trained by the monsignor at her local church and school (she goes to a Catholic school). As I said before, SO not my normal cup of tea. I don't normally like books about a specific religion-especially Catholicism because I am catholic and usually things are very negative. This wasn't so much negative though and since I was raised catholic, I had a lot of back knowledge that goes with it. You quickly learn that Bridgets father was murdered and the murderer is locked in an insane asylum now. You follow her journey as she realizes really WHO and WHAT she is, who the real murderer is, and how she is the only one capable of stopping the bad guys. There were no slow parts, and the plot was perfectly executed!

Characters Every character had depth. Though I would have loved more romance between Bridget and her love interest by the end of the story (no spoilers so I wont be naming his name) you don't know who the bad guy is until the end, but when you discover it, it makes perfect sense. Every character was perfect, even the supporting characters like Hecter and Peter!

Action/Suspense Holy crap guys! This was load packed with action and suspense! As soon as I started the book, I couldn't put it down. And I may even have nightmares now (haha-remember I was raised catholic so thoughts of crazy evil devil/demons FREAK me out!!!!)

Overall- this was perfectly executed nice change of scenery for me! I would highly recommend to ANYONE and EVERYONE who had any interest in paranormal, romance, suspence, thriller, OR any combination of the above!

review by Mrs Jones at theresamjones.blogspot.com
It's funny, three chapters into this book, and I was already picking it apart. The main character development is clunky, the secondary characters are underdeveloped, and the writing is just not very good. I kept reading, and the more I just let go of the obsessive kindle highlighting of the things I didn't like, the more I was able to just kind of enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, this book has all kinds of flaws, character development being the least of them, but I was kind of rooting for Bridget at the end. Isn't that what it's all about anyways?

After Bridget's father is brutally murdered by a paranoid schizophrenic, Bridget is not only left dealing with grief but also a new found power. She has the ability to communicate with and banish demons. An enterprising priest at her Catholic school realizes how useful Bridget's powers can be and teaches her the rules of dealing with demons and takes her to exorcisms as she needs them. Unfortunately, something very bad is brewing in the San Francisco area - a demon infestation - and Bridget must help to stop it. But is her new power an innocuous correlate? Or does the infestation have to do with her?

Basically, this is not your typical paranormal young adult novel, which is why I picked it up. I personally have never read about exorcisms in the form this was presented, and I found that part interesting even if it seemed that it wasn't researched enough. These scenes could have definitely been fleshed out with more details. I would say that this might actually be a strange blend of paranormal and horror, and I do wish the author had a clearer vision of what she was writing. This was kind of all over the place. There were definitely paranormal aspects, but some scenes bordered on your typical Rosemary's Baby horror, and then there was a mystery-based subplot (way too easy to guess the whodunnit) along with some action scenes. You can't have an demon-talking, ass-kicking, sleuthing 15-year-old heroine. It just didn't work well for me.

Speaking of the heroine, she seemed pretty horrible throughout the first part of the book. She has a super-hot baseball star suitor who is really sweet with her autistic brother and also is inexplicably infatuated with Bridget. I say inexplicably because Bridget is nothing but rude and sarcastic to him in all of their initial interludes. Far from finding it sweet that he is still interested in her, I just found it kind of pathetic. The same goes for Peter, who is even more pathetic. Supposedly, Bridget is best friends with Peter, who is head-over-heels freakishly in love with her, and she treats him as if he is nothing. Hector, on the other hand, is supposedly Bridget's other best friend, and I just don't ever feel like we get to know him. The secondary characters fell unanimously flat, except for Sammy, Bridget's 8-year-old brother, who sounds really freakin' cute. It was also nice that Bridget developed throughout the novel. By the end, she was actually not quite the terribly sarcastic teen she was in the beginning, so that was cool.

My number one gripe with this novel, though, is the writing. It was told third person, but in a really jarring stream of consciousness type of way. We are never really given a lot of insight to Bridget's reasoning for things, but she does do a whole lot of bitching. And good God, the rhetorical questions. I have a good idea, Gretchen McNeil, instead of asking us questions, why don't you tell use what's going on since you're the one inside of Bridget's head. (Sorry, Gretchen, I think you're awesome. Did you guys know that the author of this book is also an opera singer and circus performer? That may just be what made me bump this from 2 to 3 stars.) Anyways, this is a capturing from one 10 page segment of this book "Had the neighbor's cat gotten in some how?... Or maybe it was a rat?... But how had he gotten inside the house? And more importantly, how was Bridget going to get him out?... What the hell?... Had she imagined the footsteps?... why had the door been swinging back and forth?...Could this be the same thing? See?... Was she losing her mind?...How exactly did she bring this up?... Had everyone gone insane?" It was painful to read.

Other than all that, I still finished this book. It's part of a series, and I don't think I'll read the next one, but this book wrapped up enough to be read standalone I think anyways. I would recommend this to middle school or high school students who enjoy paranormal young adult romance. It's a little more frustrating reading it as an adult, but I can see why it has a high rating. For the most part, it's just not for me.
This book is a wonderful intro to this brave man.
Who was Paul Robeson? He was a lot more than just the singer of "Ol' Man River."

A native of Princeton, NJ, Robeson received a four-year athletic scholarship to Rutgers College. He was twice named All-American in football, and also played basketball, baseball and track. Graduating as class Valedictorian (an member of Phi Beta Kappa), Robeson attended, and graduated from, Columbia Law School. His attempt at a legal career did not go well. Robeson continued to play semi-pro football on the weekends, and tried his luck as a stage actor.

He became a huge star on the stage, including almost 300 performances as Shakespeare's Othello. Robeson also became a world-famous concert singer. He couldn't help but notice that during trips to Europe, especially the Soviet Union, he was treated much better than he had ever been treated in America. From the 1920's through the 1940's, Robeson made about a dozen films, including a couple of silent films. On the positive side, audiences could actually see a strong, intelligent black man in the lead role. On the negative side, Robeson's performance was usually the best part of the film. It was otherwise filled with clownish stereotypes about blacks. In frustration, Robeson walked away from Hollywood.

Robeson was not afraid to speak out on political issues, ranging from the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's, to racism in America, to opposition to the Vietnam War. Such activities made him a victim of the 1950's Blacklist, along with having his passport seized. This, plus his wife's diagnosis of terminal cancer, brought on a huge bout of depression. When he was next allowed to travel overseas, the "magic" was gone. There was time in a sanitarium, and a suicide attempt. For the last dozen or so years of his life, he lived quietly with his sister in Philadelphia, and saw very few people.

This is a wonderful book. Robeson's erasure from 20th century history should be on the level of a national embarrassment. This book will start to correct it. It is very highly recommended for everyone.
Oh wow. This series gets better and better. The more I read, the more intrigued I am and the more interested I am in these characters' fates.

There was quite a lot of action in this instalment with plenty of banter and shocking revelations that should keep every reader entertained throughout. I was most definitely entertained and I may or may not have been very, very close to exclaiming "OMG" out loud. It may or may not happened once or twice, too ...

But what I really love about Buroker's writing style, is the way she manages to combine action and humour into one lovely package. Example of something funny:
“What’s the plan, sir?” Kaika asked. She may have appeared relaxed, but her eyes were sharp as they regarded Ridge. “I have some explosives in my pack, and I can get more.”
“How will blowing things up help us find the king?” Ridge asked.
“I don’t know, but it would make me feel better.”
Or:
“I heard you were drawing on the wall in here like a three-year-old.” Therrik held a lantern up to the bars and stared at the map at the back of the cell.
“Now, Colonel, I take exception to that comment. I believe I have at least the artistic skills of a five-year-old.”
“You’re known for being delusional.”
Ridge looked at the map. “A four-year-old?”
Also, I LOVE Ridge's mom. Just saying. Her interaction with her son was so funny that my family thought I had gone nuts or something because I was wheezing of laughter. Jaxi is also still quite entertaining, but I believe Ridge's mom totally stole the spot for the character who has managed to make laugh the most.
The king is...... (no we can't cry out the king is dead, he's just missing). Love leave the king!

Yes, I'm being a bit silly, but this book had some of the more amusing and outlandish plot elements I've run into in a while. It is based on a solid foundation. From the first page we get a good idea that Sardelle's appearance had caused some ground to kidnap the king and to engage in a ritual of witch-hunting that threatens to tear Iskandia apart. It's logical to the world-building that has gone on before, but....

It did require a heavy suspension of disbelief. There are plot elements here that seem to spawn out of nowhere, and the machinations that Sardelle, Ridge and their friends engage in are in depth while also being almost a satire of what I think could have really happened.

But I haven't been so amused by a mystery tale since I watched the movie Clue and saw the 3 different endings with each one being "how it might have happened."

So kudos to Lindsay for taking the risk. She managed to avoid turning the tale into a farce, while opening up her world a bit.
I could’ve sworn that I did a review for this book and I can’t find it so maybe it was an update….
Either way I will use the old saying of “it’s all that and a bag of chips.” This has to be, hands down, my favorite book of the entire series. (I can’t remember if I said that about another book in this series so … shhh.) I apologize for the lack of cohesiveness in this review and admit that it was basically a lot of plain fan girling on my part.

This book was action packed with all of the types of action I like to read about. The scene at the end with the floating air base thingee … so awesome. In one part you have Ridge and crew fighting the Koffa fighters and in the other Sardell, Tolemek, and Captain Kaika working to bring it all down. Just one of those would be exciting enough, but both together? I don’t want to spoil anything, but I so loved that scene and everything that each character had to do/deal with to get their stuff done.
I love a good dog fight and the magic, steam punk, flyers just made it cooler to me. The ending reminded me of the big fight in a Star Wars movie where the rebels are attacking the death star … all of those individual fights, the sheer numbers, and the vastness of the death star that made you question if it were possible since it seemed unbeatable.
Even though this is my second time reading this book I still caught myself holding my breath in anticipation through a lot of the book. It is just that good, at least to me.
In regards to the beginning of the book it was exciting, just not at the same level as that whoa ending. The whole hub-bub with the queen, who would’ve thought that, really, was pretty grrr inducing. I’m glad and not glad that it was taken care of in just one book, but somehow I was thinking it would’ve been spread out … I thought that way till I got near to the end of the book. Once again there are the dual things happening with Ridge wanting to fix things to protect the city and find the king. Then there is Sardell working to figure out the whole issue concerning the people out to kill her and any other magic users.
There were a lot of surprises, some I didn’t even vaguely expect. At times I wondered if everything was going to work out or not and I enjoyed reading about if they were going to or not.
I just finished this book 3 of the series and it ended in such a cliffhanger that I wish I'd never have wasted the time and started the first one.
I loved all 3 of these books from this beginning book through book two and then when you get to the third book in the series, it ended in the worst cliffhanger and made me angry that I’d spent the time to read ANY of the books. Its as if the author just decided not to write a fourth book to wrap it all up. Was she sick of the characters? Was she tired of writing well developed in depth characters with intriguing story lines? What gives? If this author writes another book to finish this series, I will retract this…but for now, I will never read another one of her books!
Also, the publishing dates of this series being so close together is odd. Shown below are the Kindle publishing dates but the paperback dates are very close to the Kindle release dates:
Outcast Chronicles Book 3 published Aug 27,2012
Outcast Chronicles Book 2 published Aug 7th, 2012
Outcast Chronicles Book 1 published June 24th, 2012
Why three books released in such a short period of time....and then NOTHING for two years? Interesting story. About average reading. A little to simple needs to be more elaborate. Some parts don't describe things as well as they might be. They did it and then on to the next thing. Good enough till next books are bought. Not bad, just not up to my norm.
I have really enjoyed this series, but it left me hanging in the end. There needs to be a bit more closure for me to give it five stars.
This series is very captivating, the characters are very memorable and I loved reading it. This series does such a amazing job of pulling you in, the characters become you friends, family and you mourns theirs losses and rejoice at their victories.
I loved this trilogy, but I was extremely upset to find out you can't find the series that, chronologically, comes afterwards. No one is willing to part with their copies, and I understand why. However, a caution to all who are not familiar with this author be prepared for some sad and extremely upsetting things to happen. This was not written foe the feint of hear . There in lies this trilogy's glory.
What a wonderful series! I don't generally read fantasy books but when someone left the first book in this series at my house I read with zeal. I love each book and wish there were more in the series. Great writing, action, love and magic. I have been charmed,
All I can say is I love the Outcast Chronicles, this has to be my most favorite trilogy series so far. It's fast paced, gripping, makes you think hard about gender, social and racial issues both in this world and ours. The magic system in this world is so cool - both dangerous and vulnerable. The T'En (the magical race) are magnificent - its the most complex and plausible system I've read so far and I love how it adds so much to the plot complexity and charterer development - the T'En's magic is intrinsic to who they are individually and as a culture. And they're so incredibly sexy!!!

If you want to read a trilogy you won't put down to the end and then feel like you've just walked through another world and lost touch with this one, then this is for you -)
These books are very intricately plotted, as far as character interaction and political intrigue. However, don't expect huge magical battles like you would be led to believe are possible. They TALK about their powers and how badass everyone is, but no one ever actually uses them, save for about a handful of duels or battles (usually involving some degree of back-stabbing). Literally, pretty much all these self-proclaimed badasses do is sit around and scheme and treat each other like less-than-human. There is nearly no value to human life. But on the plus-side, the author has a very impressive collection of cool names for her characters. Just don't be let down by the lack of actual action or magical extravaganza that most people want out of their Fantasy stories.
I read the first book in the series and really enjoyed reading it. I was glad that I read this second book because I liked it just as much.

This book is the continuation of Romeo and Rimell's story. The only thing I disliked about the book was the ending. Unlike the first book that had a HFN ending, this ended with a cliffhanger. I dislike cliffhangers. I will however be reading the 3rd and what I hope is the final book in the series because I really enjoyed the first two.

This book had more romance and drama than in the first. Also it had a few more sex scenes and they were a little more detailed than in the first book. Said another way, they were hotter. This was fine with me as I prefer sex scenes in romance books. The hotness factor was the result of the great chemistry between Rimmel and Romeo. I was happy and relieved that there was not cheating nor OM/OW Also there were no breakups which I generally dislike and unfortunately tend to all too common in NA books. I liked that Romeo was still possessive and protective towards Rimmel. She needs someone like him, that loves her and puts her first.

Romeo's mother was more likable in this book. It was nice to find out why she acted like she did towards Rimmel in the first book. While her prior behavior towards Rimmel was not ok, at least I could understand her motivation for acting the way she did. I liked too that Romeo's father was introduced and the readers found out more about him other than he is an attorney that worked too much and therefore was not home a lot. I look forward to reading the 3rd book and wish it were already out. I do not want to have to wait until March. As with all series, I am more likely to forget about it if the gap between the books in a series are too long.
Again I was sucked in from the very start and couldn't seem to get enough of Romeo and Rimmel's enthralling story. Their relationship is so beautiful and bewitching that I can't seem to stop swooning over their love for each other. It's really a beauty to behold.

In 'Hater' we see how protective Romeo is of Rimmel and her safety. I couldn't seem to get my head around the crazy antics and lengths that Zach went to to exact his revenge on Romeo. This was a main theme in this book that left me steaming and wanting to smack Zach something fierce. Above all, I was delighted to see the strength of Romeo and Rimmel's relationship and the depth of their love for each other that always seemed to prevail during these challenging times.

One scene in particular left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not a fan of authors that try to create unnecessary turmoil and drama to keep a story going and that's exactly what happened towards the ending of this book. I get that it was written in such a manner to function as a teaser for the next book in the series, but I'm not a fan of such antics.

On another note, the Alpha buzzfeeds again made my day. It's such a beautiful addition to the book and its setting, which is very complimentary to the college theme of the book. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the Gossip girl messages from one of my favorite tv shows Gossip Girl. I was always a fan of those messages and especially her signature "xoxo Gossip Girl" closings.

Overall, another swoon-worthy read. I wasn't too certain after the first book, but after this book I'll definitely be adding Romeo to my book boyfriend's list. He's so charming, loving and devoted to Rimmel, that you can't help but fall in love with him. With that said, I'll definitely be continuing on to the next book in this series, because I need my next fix of Romeo something fierce.
OMG this book gave me the feels so bad. It's not even funny. I laughed, I cried, I threw the book across my bed in frustration and I wanted to punch on of the characters so bad.

Okay so this book is a continuation to Romeo and Rimmel's story. In the first book they had issues with a guy named Zach and that continues in this book. In order to get back at Romeo for what he did in #Nerd Zach goes after Rimmel knowing it will hurt Romeo the most. We also get to meet Romeo's parents and find out what they really think about Rimmel being in their sons lives. In the end does Zach destroy them as a couple or can they stick it out together? Will their dreams survive what they are going through?

I can honestly say I am even further in love with these characters and absolutely can't wait to continue this series. Watching Rimmel grow and become more comfortable around others has been fun. I loved watching the fight come out in her throughout this book. I loved watching her interact not only with Romeo but also with Braeden. I enjoyed how both of these guys would do absolutely anything to protect Rimmel and each other and Rimmel would do the same for them. Now we get into Romeo's parents...absolutely LOVED his father, however, his mother I am still not all that keen on. I felt like his mother was way to wishy washy and controlling. Zach is just a #Hater and I couldn't stand him.

I love Cambria's writing style. She has a way of making you feel like part of the story. I felt like I had a front row seat into the characters lives. She is an author that makes it hard to predict what will happen next. That is hard to find in a book now days as they all seem a little predictable to me anymore. I look forward to reading the next book as soon as I possibly can. I look forward to finding out what happens to their families, lives, goals and well everything. If you haven't read the series I highly recommend it because wow. Just WOW!!!
Whitney sets her murder mystery at a small unique resort on an eastern U.S. ski slope. Linda Earle disguised herself as a hostess for the resort in order to discover the true murderer of Julian MacCabe's wife and clear her brother of the murder charge. After her life is threatened several times, the plot heats up as does her love life.
Whitney's research on the area as well as the sport of skiing shines through in her descriptions. She incorporates just enough twists and turns, Enjoyable read.
Snow Fire by Phyllis Whitney

Linda Earle temporarily leaves her job in a lawyer's office in Philly to become a hostess at the Juniper Lodge in the Pocono Mountains. Her reason...the owner of the lodge, Julian McCabe and also renowned Olympic skier who lives in the mansion "Graystones" adjacent to the lodge, had befriended Linda's younger brother, Stuart Parrish, as his protégé, hoping he would reach Olympic heights.

Julian's wife, Margot, who was wheelchair bound from an accident, blamed Julian for her state and was bitter toward everyone, but when she died under mysterious causes, Stuart is arrested and imprisoned for her murder.

Linda knows her brother is innocent and will go to any lengths to prove it. After losing their parents to a fire, Linda raised her brother and knew him better than anyone and she is determined to free him and clear his name.

Included in the scenario are Shan, Julian's sister, who is a bit off base; Julian and Margot's daughter, Aria, who feels responsible for her mother's death; Clay Davidson, Shan's estranged husband and manager of the lodge, and Emory Ault, caretaker and Julian's trainer on the slopes, and who was considered as a member of the family.

Linda soon finds herself in the middle of danger and mystery. Who actually did kill Margot? She befriends Clay, who won't reveal much to her and tries to get her to leave before she's exposed as Stuart's sister, or another "accident" occurs. But Linda is stubborn and won't leave. She soon befriends Aria, and Julian, who is very cool, distant and frightening, hires her to tutor the little girl and help pull her out of her shell.

Linda feels an unlikely attraction to Julian, but refuses to give in to it until she learns more about this strange family and what really happened to Margot. She is also frightened by Emory, who as per Stuart, was dangerous and disliked her brother.

There are lots of twists and turns in this novel, and one will be kept guessing as to who the actual murderer is, but it all comes out in the end, after attempts on Linda's life. In the end, she succumbs to Julian's attraction, surprised he feels the same about her.

This is a good book to read on a hot day, for all the scenes on the ski slopes and in blizzards will certainly cool one off, but the suspense will keep one hotly turning pages.
One of Phyllis A. Whitney's talents was that she could spin up a web of suspense, murder and romance in just about any place on Earth. Including ski resorts.

So expect lots of powdery white stuff and talk of proper skiing gear in "Snowfire," a haunting little thriller where a young woman goes undercover to find the real culprit of a murder... and, in the process, falls deeply in love with a brooding, troubled Byronic hero. It sounds pretty cheesy, but Whitney's deft writing and delicate characterizations keep the story from lapsing into typical romance fare.

When her brother Stuart is accused of murder, Linda is immediately convinced that he can't possibly be guilty. But Linda knows that nobody will tell her anything if they know she's the only suspect's sister -- so she assumes a false name, gets a job at a nearby ski lodge, and begins investigating the family and home of Julian McCabe, a legendary pro skiier and Stuart's former mentor.

The crime Julian's beautiful wife Margot was pushed down an incline in her wheelchair, which ended up killing her. Stuart has been accused of killing her because she was going to reveal an affair, which would have ended Julian's mentoring.

But Linda quickly discovers that anyone in the house (and a few outside it) might have had a motive to kill Margot, including her traumatized daughter Adria, the brooding and handsome Julian, and his floaty yet malicious sister Shan. And as she helps Adria with her feelings of guilt, she finds herself falling in love with Julian -- which is a slight problem, since not only is she lying about her identity, but she knows he might have murdered his own wife.

Those who have read other books by Phyllis K. Whitney will probably know roughly what to expect from "Snowfire" -- a roughly even divide between a mystery plot, and a PG-rated romance between a fairly clueless young woman and a broodingly handsome man. You can be pretty sure that Julian and Linda will somehow end up together (despite the inevitable discovery of her true identity), but the way there is rocky and full of treacherous twists.

But it should be noted that while this book lists slightly in the direction of mystery, the mystery itself is slightly hampered by the small size of the cast -- there are only a few people who could have committed the murder, so it's easy to rule people out. But Whitney keeps the waters murky through constant hostility from supporting characters, and throws in some clever twists near the end that tie in deeply to the heroine's character development.

Speaking of which, Linda is a fairly likable heroine in the usual mold of Whitney's heroine -- smart and determined, but with some emotional issues and a heavy dose of naivete. Her determination to save her brother is not just due to love of him, but due to her own personal issues and the excessive love she lavished on him afterwards. But we see her evolve and change as she falls for Julian, in a thoroughly satisfactory manner.

The other characters are also given plenty of time to develop, in ways that make them look both potentially guilty and innocent -- Julian is a passionate, dark, brooding figure that keeps his feelings hidden even from Linda, while his floaty hippie-dippie sister Shan hides a malicious, jealous side. Even the long-dead Margot is developed beautifully, with the revelations of her malice, cheating and bitterness. Just about anything the hateful woman did could have provoked murder.

"Snowfire's" mystery struggles a bit due to the small cast, but is otherwise a solid mixture of romance, murder mystery and skiing adventures in the icy woods. For those seeking romantic suspense at its most entertaining, check this out.
I enjoy Phyllis Whitney's books. Haven't read a bad one yet.
Terrific as expected. One of my most favorite mystery authors!!
This is the first Phyllis Whitney I read as a young adult. The ending really shocked me. So great to see this author on .
Another successful adventure and escapism with a fresh look at an exotic locations.
Whitney never disappoints or bores the reader.

Born Standing Up A Comic Life Steve Martin 9781416553649 Books

I can hardly believe it’s been two years since I purchased this book and just now read it! Life takes us on a strange journey sometimes when we think we have found our calling (mine being comedy), yet life had different plans. I had been doing Hospice care as a volunteer for a few years when I took a break, thinking this will be my time to learn comedy again! Well, my sister became deathly ill and needed three brain surgeries so I was back doing bedside service…I’m not complaining at all, in fact, I’m greatly appreciative that I wasn’t working at the time so I could help her. I’m now taking a Master Class on Comedy, by Steve Martin, which reminded me of this book. So I read it!

What does this have to do with Steve Martin’s book? Comedy is born out of life’s tragedies and trauma’s; they force us to become stronger and more resilient, and over time - look at things - in a sometimes disturbing humorous light.

Steve’s book was enlightening and uplifting, from learning about his triumphs and struggles- in all that he endured to become the comic, and man he is today. I admire him greatly! The biggest obstacle and accomplishment when reading this, and I’d think he’d agree, was after obtaining a certain amount of respect, fame, and fortune, and having written “Lapin Agile” a play set in 1905 about the hypothetical meeting of Picasso and Einstein – Steve returned home. He earned the respect of love of his father, and basked in the love of his mother and sister; taking delight in their stories of forgotten anecdotes. There isn’t any greater gift in life than that!

If you desire to be a comic/entertainer I highly recommend reading this book. It will not only inspire you, but offer you an introspective look at what and why you wish to be a comic. Comedy is a journey - such is life, and what better way to view it than in this humorous biography, “Born Standing Up.”
Disclaimer I LOVE Steve Martin. I read this expecting to love it and was not disappointed. It was even more than I expected. A private man courageously opens up about his origins, including his troubled family relationships. He shares his magician techniques (to a point), notes on comic performances, BUNCHES of other insightful stuff. It is a fascinating exploration that he refers to as a biography rather than an autobiography for reasons that you will understand once you read it--and please do. A personal note--I saw him in an arena setting when I was a teenager and had no idea that he'd reached a point in his standup career that was not...rewarding. I'm still grateful that I got to see him in his standup career.
This book has been recommended over and over again by entrepreneurs and creators lately, so added to the pile by recommending it on my book recommendations email list. I had always thought Steve Martin was at least mildly funny, but didn't think about him beyond that. This book is a great story of a creator's journey, and it was interesting peer into the history of the beginnings of stadium-filling comedy shows.

Steve Martin set records filling stadiums for comedy shows. Before that, he was an opening act at concerts. Before that, like many comedians, he struggled, doing five shows a day for twelve years. He gives insights into how family dynamics drove him into his craft, and what it was like to discover his unique creative voice.

It's well-written, which is something I'm especially appreciative of lately. I recently read a book by another comic that was poorly-written. I finished it because I was interested in that person's story, but the stink crept into my own writing, and it took a few days of practice to shake it.
Steve Martin doesn't really give us an autobiography — engaging in the public soul searching and detailed exposition of oneself that makes a good autobiography is not in his character. He's much too private a person (at least that much of his personality comes across in this book). Instead, he gives us an overview of how he became famous, what he became famous for, and his reactions to both. There is some introspection, and enough personal reflection to connect us to Steve ... Martin ... but not a whole lot of detail. The question is, do we really need more? The author's goal for this book wasn't to tell his life story; it was to tell his early career story, which, to be sure, is impossible without some of the other stuff. Overall, I think, he gives us just enough of the personal to understand the professional, and enough of the professional to see how he got so famous. He doesn't deal with his career in movies, or his other accomplishments. It is strictly about his emergence as the biggest name in stand-up comedy. It is, therefore, an easy, gentle, reassuring read, bound to please his biggest fans, like me, and, yet, leave them wanting more. That's show biz for you.
There are few people out there who have not heard of Steve Martin. Many know him from his famous movies or appearances on Saturday Night Live. Born Standing up is the story of Martin’s previous life as a standup comedian. He tells the story of growing up working at magic shops, performing skits at empty bars, and running out of money not once, but several times.

I leave a 3-star review mainly because I felt that I was left with a lot of unanswered questions. The book is quite short for a memoir and at the end, I felt that I was just getting started. Martin tells the story of his childhood and the early years of his standup career well, but I personally feel like this book is an unfinished product. It felt as if there were intentions to write a comprehensive memoir at some point, but the publishing deadline arrived and the book was shipped as is.

Despite my critical review, I would say the book is fully worth the read. It is one of those books you have to sit down and digest all at once and enjoy entering the mind of the man who invented an entirely new version of standup comedy.

No, really, it is. I will read this book nearly every year for the rest of my life.
The story of Saiyuri is a very detailed one, and how she came to be a geisha. The (fictional) biographical novel of a geisha is definitely a wonderful read. I love all things Japanese, and this book is a great insight into the world, as it is well researched and well written. In some places it is like a story, and in others it is like reading an encyclopedia of Japanese culture, and the two mix so well together that it is almost unnoticeable. The characters are believable, and each ones follows their path in life and you know where most of them land. That is definitely good story-telling.
Moreover, the book is also going to draw you into a life story you will want to know about, even if you saw the movie first (like me). believe me, the movie has nothing on the book. It only gives you a visual for what the world looks like. The true depth of the book is much deeper, stronger and more drawn out in a way that the reader will find most enjoyable.

Memoirs of a Geisha Random House Large Print Arthur Golden Books Reviews

I’d hear so much of this book and in many bookshelves that I craved to read it. This book has an exciting start into the world of a Geisha (a concept I totally misconstrued) and what it must take to be forcefully introduced & endure its lifestyles. Towards the latter half our protagonist falls deeply in love with her accidental customer & keeps endlessly whining about the ‘ not so ‘ difficult choices she could have made to confess her love for him. This is a true story with epithets used to shield customers of the higher echelons in society from being discovered & yes, Sayuri may not have known of how to cut to the chase therefore receiving the benefit of the doubt that my disappointment isn’t truly justified. It’s a memoir after all - one’s journey with no add-ons.
This was the first book selected by the book club I was invited to join at the start of the year. From the first page I was hooked on the beautiful evocative descriptions of people, places and situations. The story is essential the life story of a little girl from a poor fishing village in Japan who finds herself taken to the Trisha district known as Gion , where she overcomes loss of family and the loss of the life of her childhood, and learns the art of being a geisha. We hear the story from Sayuri at the age of 80 years or so, remembering her life and how she came to be where she is today.
As I said the descriptions alone are enough to make this a worthwhile read. But the story itself is also full of schemes and intrigue, and shadowy unknown benefactors that influence the course of the protagonist's life with small actions that have tremendous impact. It is also a story of true love, as well as a story about the strength and struggles of women in Japan . It allows the reader to become part of a different culture and way of being...and of appreciating that the two layers of Japanese culture the surface story as illustrated by the beauty and grace of the geishas versus the broken, harsh, and grimy circumstances that produce the geishas. All of this combines to give a thoroughly absorbing reading experience that leaves one feeling a little richer inside for having completed the book.
It was a great book to start off my year and I would recommend it to anyone interested in appreciating gender and culture issues from a different perspective., and to any reader who appreciates a well written tale.
Recently I watched the movie again, and then read about it, and was intrigued to read a man had written it AND it was his first book. So of course I had to Edward the book. It was even better than the movie. Interesting to me that the geishas voice changed, matured, even as she added years to her life. I was richly blessed by the reading of this book. Thank you, Mr. Golden, for writing it.
Unfortunately, I admit I haven't read this book in twenty or so years and I imagined it reading the same. I couldn't have been more wrong! It's so much more heartbreaking, intriguing and entertaining than when I was younger. There was so much I thought I understood back then that now I appreciate.
I love Riley Jenson books! She is a very well developed character that shows its OK to be vulnerable with her heart, but does not let it get walked all over. She has the perfect amount of sass, and her fighting skills get better with each book! I like how well Ms. Arthur writes about each of the men in Riley's life and makes me feel like I know and care about the characters.
In the 2 books I have read, so far, I love the the ongoing mystery of what will happen next in the labs and love the addition of each the men in her life.
I admire that Riley still has hope for love and seeks it out even after being lied to repeatedly by Misha, Talon and others she thought cared for her. She still seeks love after being used and abused terribly by these same mates, used for breeding purposes and as a lab rat by the people hunting her as well as by the people she once cared for.
I think with each new book I get more intigued to see how she will deal with the next obsticle and I like that she seems to deal with the problems like most people do and wrestles with how to come to terms with the decisions she makes and is forced to make.
I would recommend this series to anyone that likes a fast paced mystery with a heroine that is sassy and real.

Kissing Sin Keri Arthur 9780553588460 Books Reviews

This book ended far more abruptly than I expected it to, which I guess is a good way of saying I didn’t want it to end. I’m looking forward to the next book. These books are very sex-positive, which I think we need in our rather prudish American culture. Riley is smart & courageous. She makes a kick-ass heroine despite her aversion to killing, which is also what sets her apart from the guardians. I’ll definitely keep reading the series to see what Arthur comes up with next.
Riley Jensen is a half-werewolf, half-vampire dhampir with a love of her wolf heritage and overall contempt for most vampires. She's a liaison for Melbourne's Directorate of Other Races - an aussie equivalent of the FBI for supernaturals. Or she was. Now she's being pulled closer and closer to the one job she's never wanted - being a guardian. Kissing Sin begins with Riley waking up next to a dead body, and her life takes another horrified spin when she realizes she's been caught and experimented on in the continuing conspiracy to get her pregnant.

The plot of Kissing Sin is a continuation of the one begun in Full Moon Rising, so I'd recommend you start there if you're so inclined. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I'm not feeling remarkably charitable about recommending this series so far. It's not bad, really, it's just...while I've never thought of myself as particularly prudish, Riley's sexual promiscuity in Kissing Sin has crossed the line - from a species-centric celebration into pathetically gratuitous. I understood the reason behind having SO much sex in Full Moon Rising - we were told over and over and over that the full moon almost completely commands a werewolf's sexual needs for the seven days preceding the full moon. I didn't like it, as it always seemed like sort of a flimsy excuse and I personally believe the survival need supersedes sexual ones, but at least there was a reason for it. That reason was no longer relevant in Kissing Sin and yet I couldn't see any difference AT ALL between Riley's sexual behavior in this book versus the previous one (other than the names of the partners) - and that IS a failing. I'm sorry, but when the sexuality of a heroine of a book doesn't just become the plot, but completely obliterates the plot (like LKH's Anita Blake series) there's something wrong.

Not to mention the vampire mogul Quinn is back and in a COMPLETE about-face, is now clamoring for an exclusive relationship with the werewolf who just last book he had made no bones about leaving behind. There's a very flimsy and unbelievable reason given for that abrupt about-face that never quite works. That's a shame, actually, because I like Quinn. More so than Riley. Unfortunately, Kissing Sin suffers from some of the same issues that Full Moon Rising does. Both are at times muddy and plodding, and other times frenetic and confused. Both are flawed.

Still, not all is bad. Riley is a competent, intelligent protagonist who stands on her own two feet (or four paws) and doesn't walk around waiting for a male to save her. She's a bit saucy and a bit wicked and she tends to get into trouble...I sure wouldn't let her drive my car...but when she isn't "celebrating" her sexuality with every interested male, she's a solid heroine. Quinn, the ubersexy and ultrarich vamp, is less layered and complex in this one, but still a favorite character, and I sincerely hope to see more of him in future books. Riley is still supported by a solid group of secondary characters - Riley's vampire boss (Jack) and one of Rhoan's mates (Liander) in particular - who are interesting and sympathetic with a lot of development potential, and the bad guys are still really repugnant.

I think I'll be giving Riley one more try, but unless the sex in the next book is either toned down or given a more believable connection to the plot, I doubt I'll stick around for more than that.

Warning The Riley Jensen series is NOT a romance series - it's an erotic urban fantasy. If you expect that going in, maybe you won't have the negative reactions that I did.
The main issue I have with these books so far is that they just start and stop; there is no beginning and no ending. The first few chapters of this book were a little confusing to me because it doesn't start where the last one left off. Riley just wakes up naked in an alley after she's (surprise-surprise) kidnapped yet again and I was left wondering if my book was perhaps missing the first chapter or two that lead up to this point. The ending of this book was much the same--It left me with no closure and seemed like my book was missing the last chapter that lead into the next book. I also found it a little hard to keep track of the names of the "hermaphrodite-wolf-shape shifter-clones." Since there are several of them and they all have two different names, it was a little difficult to follow in the end when you find out who some of the bad people are.

With that being said, the rest of the book was really good. The addition of two new characters, Kade and Kellan, added a new level of drama to Riley's already crazy love life. Both of them shake things up for Quinn who gets a bit too controlling in this book. He's starting to irritate me a bit because he just can't seem to get on board with what shifter's are all about. While there were a few things that I thought were a bit predictable, there were also several twists I didn't see coming. A few of my questions did get answered and I'm really hoping to find resolution to more of them in the next book. ONE MAJOR THING that I did at the end of this book that I didn't do at the end of `Full Moon Rising' was read the first chapter of the next book, `Tempting Evil.' Thankfully, the next book seems to pick up where this one leaves off - which makes me happy!! Had I read the first chapter of `Kissing Sin' before I bought it.......I'm not sure I would have continued with this series.

Conclusion If you get on board with Riley and "the ways of the wolf" you're really going to enjoy this book. If you can't get, you should probably stick to reading Twilight.
I rarely rate a book five stars, but this classic of the west earned my highest rating. Not only that, Wildfire is one of the very best books I have ever read. Zane Grey's description of this wonderful part of the country along with his character development was 'spot on'. He made it easy to transfer the written word to the mind's eye with his detailed portrayal of all aspects of the landscape, the characters and - of course - the horses. Speaking of which I certainly can relate to the indomitable spirit of Wildfire having spent a fair amount of time around both show horses and feral horses. A spirited horse would most certainly try with all its spirit and lifeblood to escape capture and domestication. In this case, even though Wildfire was caught and trained (somewhat) he never really abandoned his wild, majestic inner core. It was as though he tolerated his captors after having been hounded for hundreds of miles and was finally subdued - but never conquered - by them.
This book is really about Wildfire first and foremost, and secondly about the people, good and bad, who came in contact with him. That part of the book is almost a subplot, but is still very complete and well defined.
I highly recommend this wholesome book for any person, young or old, man or woman, boy or girl interested in how spirit manifests itself and how a feral creature can teach us all about courage and persistence.

Wildfire Zane Grey 9781406953770 Books Reviews

Thoroughly enjoyed another Zane Grey novel. His great love of the West and of real men, the cowboys and their wonderful horses. His description of the canyons and the sage so well done.
I did not like the book. Didn't finish it because too slow moving. Went into too much detail about trees, leaves, sky, things you can imagine with just one description not ten or more
Zane to me brings back a flood of great memories curled up in front of the wood stove, coffee and reading Zane till my heart's content or up to when he introduced cars as the cowboy had to be in love with his horse...https//images-na.ssl-images-/images/I/51oJJshNjFL._SS300_.jpg
Another good story by Grey. This one starts a little slow compared to his other stories, but once all the characters are introduced it really picks up.
The hero, Sloan, orphaned young, became a hunter of wild horses. Once he saw the wild red stallion , Wildfire, he became his life mission. Lots of good characters and Horses!
Wildfire was my first selection of the many stories by Zane Grey. His style of writing has such a fashion, it simply keeps me in the saddle for hours (and I shouldn't be). Sometimes accidentally coming across something that I might think of as minor, could be like stumbling on to a long lost valuable artist I never knew before )
I'm not usually much for westerns but I remember reading this when I was young and wanted to see if I still liked it. There is a lot of description in the novel, my mind can see the scene before me quite well.

There are choices we make in life and choices that make us. This book does a good job at intertwining them together. The tension builds and eases and sometimes it is difficult to put down. There is something for everyone in this book.

Lose yourself in a harsh land...
We get to witness Dex's journey to becoming Dex 2.0... this story is told completely through Dex's POV and runs parallel to "On Demon Wings".... Dex is a walking disaster, devastated after Perry leaves him; he must face the consequences of his actions and fears and find the strength and determination to rebuild himself and his life.... we watch him face his truths and the haunting memories of his past... we then witness Dex's POV as he watches Perry suffer her possession; helplessness battles fierce determination to save his soulmate... I enjoyed living in Dex's mind for a time and gaining an understanding of his actions and reactions; he is a complex character that is layered with a haunted past leading to insecurities and emotional obstacles... it was nice to see his character become healthy physically and mentally through this story and do what needed to be done to partner Perry... an intense ride from start to finish ... 4.5 Stars:)

And With Madness Comes the Light Experiment in Terror #65 edition by Karina Halle Romance eBooks Reviews

The famous tagline, "There can be only one", may have been written for the Highlander movies, but I think it perfectly describes Dex Foray. He is truly an original. Who else can shock, entice, and make us laugh the way he does? It's no coincidence he is at the top of nearly every EIT fan's book boyfriends list. Goodness knows he's at the top of mine! It's because with Dex, we know there will never be a dull moment. Good or bad, he always finds ways to surprise us. It's what makes him so fascinating and fun to read about. It's also the reason all other male characters stand in his shadow. Don't get me wrong, there are a ton of truly amazing male characters out there and I've ranted and raved about quite a few of them, but there is only one Dex.

In his 2nd novella, And With Madness Comes The Light, we see Dex at his very lowest, starting right after the fateful events of book 4, Lying Season. He's a despairing wreck, neglecting himself, his apartment, his job, even Fat Rabbit. Fortunately, he has some excellent friends who refuse to let him go quietly into that good night. Rebecca, Emily and Dean are lifesavers, and without their support and help, Dex would still be lost in the darkness of his own misery.

I love Dex to bits, but I'm almost glad he hit rock bottom. There have been too many mistakes, too many moments missed and chances blown. It was time for him to step up and be the man we all believe he's capable of being. To prove, not just to Perry, but to himself as well, that's he's worthy of her.

If you're looking for feels, you'll find lots of them in AWM. Maybe you'll cry, maybe you won't, but you WILL experience every high and low Dex does. He WILL tug at your emotions, he WILL pluck all your heart strings. And yet, as often as I ached for Dex and what he was going through, I was so damn proud of him too. Perhaps that's strange to say about a fictional character, but it's true. And I loved him all the more for transforming himself into a better man while still retaining his essential Dexness. He's still the same pervy weirdo we fell for in Darkhouse; he's just a new and improved version. Dex 2.0.

And With Madness Comes The Light is flawlessly written and sure to shoot straight to the top of every Dex-lover's favorites list. I read it twice in 24 hours, and then a third time a few days later. If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does!

I cannot wait for Come Alive (EIT #7) to release later this year. An ENTIRE BOOK written from Dex's POV? Yes please!
Have I said how much I enjoy reading from Dex's Point of View before? Well, Karina is a damn genius when it comes to him. He's kind of a dork, kind of stuck as a teenager, kind of a douche, but every bit of a hilarious, well meaning man. I love when we get to read about him. This book actually runs parallel with book 5 so we got to see what Dex went through while Perry was in Portland being possessed. How his longing for her never changed. How if he would've just told the truth to his best friend, things could've been different from the get go. But then we wouldn't have had all the good crazy stuff that happened in book 5, right?
Great book, great series and always fun to get into Dex's messed up head!
"Love and hate were two sides of the same coin, and my coin was destined to land with love facing up. And the minute I made peace with those odds was the minute I'd start winning."
Miss Honoria Baker-Sneed has something Marcus St. John, the Marquis of Treymount, wants. The St. John talisman ring has been in his family for generations and his brother lost it to the fair Honoria. She wants an outlandish sum for its return as her family has fallen on hard times, but is willing to risk all on a wager. Both bid on antiquities and are skilled in deception. But Marcus calls her bluff and puts her in an untenable position. All the while, he is fighting his unusual attraction to the beautiful woman; an attraction his family says is caused by the ring. He denies this curse as folderol and takes on her challenge. Then the unthinkable happens.

The conclusion to the St. John Talisman Ring series is a delightful story that I recommend to those looking for a hard-won happy ever after with some poignant moments and laughter thrown in. Realistic language of the Regency Era adds atmosphere to the tale and the protagonists' families lend variety to the yarn.

Lady in Red Avon Historical Romance Karen Hawkins 9780060584061 Books Reviews

I love Karen Hawkins and tried to read almost all of her books.

Her characters, both the men and women, are strong.
Ms. Hawkins knows how to write a plot that draws the reader in and keeps you reading. I could not stop reading
Presents a different point of view than the usual "ton" cover-up. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in historical romance.
Another excellent book by Karen Hawkins. This book was fabulous. Easy to read, a great cast of characters, a book that was hard to stop reading. I will look for more books by this author.
I took my time with this story. One has to because it's a bit slow. It's immersive and you find yourself caring about the other people that are not the main focus. It's worth the time if you are looking for a gentle read.
I have been reading historical romances for over thirty years and in all that time, I have found that there are some authors I consider must buys, and trust me, Karen Hawkins is one of those authors. Loved the banter between Marcus and Honoria and the secondary characters added to storyline, making you feel like you are right there in the middle of all the ruckus! Ms. Hawkins writes exactly the type of story that I want in my HRs, namely, great alpha hero, smart and witty heroine, great story line and of course, the lovely way it all comes together for their HEA! You certainly have a devoted reader here, Karen!
I don't really care for Honoria. What was Karen Hawkins thinking? The one who she thinks Marcus would love and show him how "bad" he is extorts money from him? Why the heck would he fall in love with her? The woman who is asking 70000 times what the ring is worth just because she knows its sentimental value to him and he can "afford it"? He is suppose to think woman are money hungry and manipulative and Honoria is suppose to show him their not? Honoria is worse than Marcus yet Karen wants to make her more lovable than him. She trys to portrays Marcus purchase of a nobalemans land as dastardardlly and cold harted when the man keeps drincking and gaming his fortune away yet Honoria is suppose to be a poor girl down on her luck. She does this a lot in her books. The woman say one thing is bad about the men and they are just as bad if not worse. I love her secondary characters and if you overlook Honoria actions at times then the story line is good you just wish they got together in a better way. I keep hoping when I read her books some nice woman comes and marries the hero's for I really don't care for the woman.
My 9-year-old semi-reluctant reader adores this series (full-color version!) and ate it up. Hard to get her to put it down. I remember the original Babysitters Club series from when I was a kid; everybody loved it. This is a great modernization and great illustrations for great tween-girl stories.

Poor Mallory #39 BabySitters Club Quality Ann Matthews Martin 9780833561015 Books Reviews

My daughter LOVES this series of books! My child, who was never a big reader, went through TWO of these books in a weekend! The themes are appropriate and the ease of the read due to graphic novel format helps her to feel successful and accomplished as a reader. Will continue to buy these for her!
Hey guys
it's Mintstar from Weatherclan!
Here is my review

Okay to be a hundred precent honest with you, Stacey is one of my least favorite characters in the series but, she does show a lot personality in this book. She stands up for herself and she tells her parents her feelings on certain doctors she goes to. She also talks to Ms.Johannessen about how she feels.

When they put the "The Babysitters Agency" in to it thats where i started to cringe a little bit.

Overall this was a pretty good read!

I have to go and apprentice Cedarkit,Riverkit, and Brindlekit!
May starclan be with you always!
Mintstar
I have a super sensitive little gal who gets very upset when people are sick. I thought maybe the truth about Stacy was she had 3 nipples! I mean. I dunno! My daughter is 10 and liked the first baby sitters club book but got scared for Stacy (and herself...she's a germaphobe and instantly was afraid she had diabetes, too) so I'm just putting it out there in case anyone else has sensitive kids as well.
As a kid I read all the original Babysitters Club books. My daughter loves graphic novels, and mentioned these to me. I was confused at first after she said I got the wrong babysitters club book for her. It turns out these were redone for the current generation. I read some of it and it is really cool how the story is the same, but edited down and in comic form. My daughter really likes some of Raina Telgemeier's other graphic novels; Drama, Sisters, and Smile. I am not surprised she loves these. I also like that they are half the price on than at the store. I'm glad the stories I loved as a girl my daughter now loves, even if they are different.
I used to love the Babysitters Club series when i was growing up and i thought the comic versions would be an easier read for my second grader who reads at a third grade + level. She reads so well, but i’ve been having a hard time getting her to stay interested in books that she wants to finish reading. With these books, she finally wants to keep reading and wants to finish each book! My mom is diabetic and this book in particular has helped my daughter understand what that means.
My 9 year old daughter loves these graphic novel books! We were so sad to learn that they are only making 4 of this series in graphic novels. Cute story line- same as the ones I read when I was a kid. These books are great for the kids who are still al little intimidated by a regular chapter book and for the ones who love to see pictures with what they are reading.
My daughter hates reading because she is dyslexic. I was SOOOOOOO happy when we found these at Barnes and Nobles. My daughter has regained so much confidence now that she can read with pictures again (at age 12). I read all of these when I was her age (no pix) and I REALLY wish they sold them in a big set so she can start with #1 and move forward without me having to buy each one.
My 9-year-old semi-reluctant reader adores this series (full-color version!) and ate it up. Hard to get her to put it down. I remember the original Babysitters Club series from when I was a kid; everybody loved it. This is a great modernization and great illustrations for great tween-girl stories.
Nothing was wrong with my book when I got it. I just didn't like the book itself. It was difficult to follow and sounded like it was written by someone in middle school.

Lorali A colourful mermaid novel that not for the fainthearted Howard Hughes 9781471404221 Books Reviews

A whimsical and, yet, dark tale. The rational world we know living unknowingly aside a magical world with mermaids, pirates, and sirens. In this story the innocence of two main characters is juxtaposed with the brutality of the worlds above and below water. I love the prose and the use of three narrators Lorali, Rory, and the Sea. Each had their own characteristic Lorali's was one-worded sentences centered around the senses of the moment, Rory's was like any other teenage boy, and the Sea was a great outside, but omnipresent character who was even sassy at times. This was a novel I didn't want to rush. I loved basically everything about this novel. Even in the ending I have hope. I'd like to buy my own copy NOW. One tiny down side was that I anticipated the ending so much that the final showdown wasn't given much more detail than was needed. Even then I wasn't let down that much. Dockrill was great at creating this magical realistic world and adding snark and humor where needed. Things weaved seamlessly for me.

Thanks to NetGalley and Hot Key Books!
So, Lorali is about Lorali, a mermaid who swims up to the surface and is transformed. That's the basic plotline but there's so much more to the book, it does not just center around Lorali and it's unlike any other mermaid book.

Lorali have been on my radar for a while; I love reading books about mermaids even though I don't read them that often. Unfortunately I'm often disappointed by said books - I wasn't this time though!

This story holds a bunch of different characters and each one is unique! We have Lorali who is this strong and wonderful character! She surprised me throughout the entire book - I had not expected such a strong, willfull and confident character in her, I don't know how I imagined or expected she would be but nonethless she is a kickass character!
Rory is the guy who saves Lorali from drowning when she transfered (ironic, right?). Even though Rory is the hero in the story he's such a cutiepie; I simply love the fact that he's so shy around Lorali and even though he leaves her a couple of times in the beginning he definitely makes up for it in the end!
There's a bunch of other characters and each of them are important for the story!

Lorali surprised me more than once. I thought it was going to be like any other mermaid book I'd read a normal town and then a mermaid arrive and things start happening. Claiming that Lorali is like any other mermaid book is definitely wrong. Lorali doesn't just have mermaids, Lorali has pirates and sirens as well and even though I didn't like it in the beginning I loved it in the end. It's so full of imagination.
I love the fact that their tails or 'tapestraries' show their stories and the fact that the mermaids or mermen actually used to be human! It's such a cool take on the "usual" mermaid story.

Lorali is told from multiple perspectives; Rory (a sweet human guy), Lorali and the sea! I loved reading the chapters told from the seas point of view, it was so unlike any other story and so fun too!

As any other book there's a certain "dialect" which is a bit weird in the beginning but after a while it's quite easy to comprehend. For example humans or regular people are called 'Walkers' - which I thought was a surname to begin with. Once you're immersed in the story everything makes sense - trust me!

Another thing I really loved about this book is the fact that it's not just about Lorali! There's so many other stories in the book and I enjoyed everyone of them. We have stories about the pirates on the two ships, we have some stories about the mermaids and how they deal with Lorali's disapperance and we have some stories about ancient mermaid history - which was probably my favourite part of the entire book.

The ending seriously killed me! Don't worry, I'm not going to spoil it for you but I just want to say that I did not expect that ending, it took me completely by surprise! And yes, I was devestated but it's the perfect ending to the story, even though it's heartbreaking.
I received Lorali by Laura Dockrill from The Five Mile Press (Hot Key Books) in exchanged for an honest review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts on the book.
As soon as I read the synopsis for Lorali, I knew I needed it in my hands so I could read it. Firstly the cover is stunning, not only does it look beautiful. but it feels so cool. The front has scales like fish do, or like a mermaid’s tale and you can feel them.
Lorali jumps through 3 points of view; Rory the male protagonist and who the novel follows, Lorali; the mermaid that washes ashore and ‘The Sea.’
It was easy to distinguish between the different points of view. Rory had a very man like even boy like attitude in the way that he spoke and referred to things. I actually really enjoyed Rory as a Protagonist. It’s rare that I read a book with a male protagonist and I find them 1. Hard to connect to and 2. There isn’t too much of it. Rory is kind of the loner in a sense – he has friends, yes. But I got the vibe that he likes to be alone and that people just don’t get him.
Pretty early on in the book, the reader is able to see that Rory family is pretty dysfunctional. His father has left and too Rory, he is dead to him, but this took a toll on Rory’s mum and she isn’t what Rory needs.
Lorali’s point of view is interesting. All her sentences are short and don’t always make sense. But I think that added to her character. Lorali acted like a little girl and in a sense she was. She didn’t really know all too much about the land and ‘walkers,’ so she was new to everything. She acted like a 3 year old and it was so cute. She was excited about so many different things that a normal 16/17 year old wouldn’t get excited about. It was so adorable and I love the way that Rory acted about it as well; yes it thought it was so wired before he knew what she was, but after…oh it made my heart flutter.
‘The Sea’ was an interesting point of view. I haven’t read too many things when an author personifies something and I think that Laura Dockrill, did it perfectly. It was humanized in a way that if the chapters of Lorali didn’t have ‘The Sea’ at the top, you would have thought it was human.
‘The Sea’ followed a different people and it also gave the reader some back story on things and people that were brought up through the book.
One of the groups of people that the sea followed were aboard the Liberty Ship, the Ablegares boys, who are pirates. Otto, Oksa and Jasper are quite entertaining characters and I really enjoyed following their story. They shared such an awesome bond it was fun to read, but then they could be harsh and mean.
‘The Sea’ also follows Orla a mermaid whose job is to keep an eye on the walkers, again she was a really interesting character, which kind of disappointed me in the end.
Although I loved the plot, the characters and all the twists and turns. I didn’t fall in love with the writing style. I am not a massive fan of lots of short sentences, I felt that when the book was in Lorali’s point of view it made sense, but not when it was in others. I also felt the ending lacked – I was just really confused by the ending. I don’t know if that was just me and I missed something.
Overall, I really enjoyed Lorali. It was a fun, exciting read, that I was turning page after page. It was fast paced and exciting. I also loved that Laura Dockrill put newspaper/internet and other forms of media pieces in the book about things that occurred it added something different to an already unique book. There is so much more that I could go on about, but I won’t. If you like fantasy/paranormal, romance anything really, I think that you would enjoy Lorali.
Loved this book very much! Hoping for a sequel to it someday. ;)
Amazing book! Can't wait for Laura to write another. Read it twice.
